Yesterday, the check engine light in my car came on. I have an 02 Monte Carlo, and when I took it to the auto shop, I was told that the catalic converter wasn’t functioning, and that it would need to be replaced. Thankfully, it’s still under extended warranty, and I was able to take it to a dealership and get it fixed for free. However, I was just wondering are they really that expensive to replace? I guess i’d like to know for future reference…they never gave me an estimate, just told me it was still under warranty and that I could get it done for free. I was super happy but still curious…I don’t know much about cars so just wondering what that part does and how much it costs to fix or replace?
Thankful that I didn't have to pay, but still curious….?

Anywhere from a few to several hundred dollars. Figure on the higher end at a dealership. This link explains pretty well how they work;

$250 universal style to $650 original equipment style.
